Talgar Ancient Settlement
The ancient settlement Talgar (Talkhir, Talkhiz) is located on the southern outskirts of the modern city of Talgar, Almaty region, at the foot of the Zaili Alatau mountains.
Founded in the 8th century, the city of Talgar was a medieval center of trade and crafts in the Ili River valley and had connections with China, Iran, India and Japan through the Great Silk Road.
Talgar is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with seven other settlements of the Great Silk Road.
Unfortunately, this unique place is in unsatisfactory condition, as it has been unfenced and unguarded for a long time.
Nevertheless, the ancient settlement of Talgar is worth a visit on the way to good camping sites nearby. The surroundings of Talgar are beautiful and convenient for summer and winter outings along passable mountain routes, only 30 km from the city of Almaty.
